Root Canal Treatment

"Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth. When one undergoes a root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed."

--American Association of Endodontists

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a root canal?

Dr. Stancill removes the infected pulp and nerve in the root of the tooth, cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal, then fills and seals the space.

Why would I need a root canal?

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes:

  • deep decay
  • genetics
  • repeated dental procedures on the tooth
  • a cracked or chipped tooth

In addition, a blow to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

You might need a root canal if you are experiencing:

  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • Decay or darkening of the gums
  • Severe pain while chewing or biting
  • Pimples on the gums
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swollen or tender gums

Wil I feel pain during or after the procedure?

Many endodontic procedures are performed to relieve the pain of toothaches caused by pulp inflammation or infection. With modern techniques and anesthetics, most patients report that they are comfortable during the root canal.

For the first few days after the root canal, your tooth may feel sensitive, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure. This discomfort can be relieved with over-the-counter or prescription medications.

Your tooth may continue to feel slightly different from your other teeth for some time after your root canal is completed. However, if you have severe pain or pressure, or pain that lasts more than a few days, call us and we will work with you to relieve your pain.

Can I go about my day after getting a root canal?

Although you may be numb for 2-4 hours, this procedure will not take you out of commission and most people go on with their day afterwards. We do, however, advise against eating until the numbness is completely gone.
